ABOUT DAVID FEDER
Magic happens when a person finds the one thing in life he or she was meant to do. Such is the case with Upper Keys musician David Feder. Somehow it's hard to imagine Feder doing anything other than creating and playing music.
Known for his skills as a jazz and blues musician, Feder embraces all types of music. His band, the Saltwater Blues Band, (aka Salagua Azul) includes musicians from Argentina, Colombia, Spain and Puerto Rico and Feder enjoys the interpretations these musicians bring to the pieces they play. His current musical interests include Cajun and bluegrass sounds, and he also studies and experiments with Celtic music.
According to Feder, Americans place too much emphasis on categorizing music. He enjoys playing in Europe where attitudes toward musical styles are more liberal. Fluent in French, he often plays in the south of France and his music has been used in French movies, environmental videos and radio commercials. Lately, he has also been performing onstage with his son Nyan, a budding young guitarist following in his father’s footsteps.
 |
Like his son, Feder’s interest in music began early in life. Feder began taking piano and guitar lessons when he was four years old and was writing songs for the guitar by the age of ten. “Some of the music compositions I play today are variations of songs I wrote as a child. I believe we all have at least one song inside of us," comments Feder, "and everything we write ends up being a version or another expression of that song."
|
Originally from Niagara Falls, New York, Feder studied engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology. After graduation, he enrolled in the music education program at the State University of Buffalo. Interestingly, Feder says school was difficult, musically/spiritually. "It's hard to play and improvise when you're being taught to try and quantify everything," he said. "To me it felt like It was sucking the art out of the music."
He began performing with bands playing saxophone and guitar and doing studio session work . As a favor, he agreed to help out a friend by playing the guitar in his jazz band. According to Feder, "Even a bad night playing music is better than working!"
|
Feder feels strongly about helping others. He performs 12 - 13 benefit concerts a year in the Upper Keys. On all of his CD's you'll find the line, "Please adopt a homeless animal." Words he lives by, since all of his dogs have been adopted from shelters. Dave is also one of the principal organizers of "BayJam", which raises money for art and musics scholarships, and "Moradapalooza."
Feder is a devoted husband and father - wife Suzi and son Nyan take center stage in his life. Eleven year old Nyan not only joins his dad on stage during performances, he even accompanies David on two songs in his album "The Reason Why:".

With his son standing next to him on stage, David Feder has come full circle in a life inexorably intertwined with music.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USING
THIS CD DURING A MASSAGE SESSION
|
 |
This CD was was inspired by and co-produced with massage therapists for use at The Blu Bamboo, an exclusive day spa in the Florida Keys. The music offers a perfectly paced instrumental journey, sequenced for healing therapies including massage and bodywork.

The running time of THIS TIME IN BETWEEN includes music for preparation of the room atmosphere and the therapist's state of mind and energy level. The music is designed to gently takes the healer and client into deeper and deeper levels of relaxation. After about an hour, the music gently brings the energy level up and leaves all involved with an uplifted spirit of hope and abundance.
DAVID'S SUGGESTED
MUSIC SEQUENCE:
1. Start CD. During songs 1&2, Prepare room atmosphere, light candles and incense. Prepare therapy surface. (table or chair) Greet client, ushering into your healing space, allowing her to relax and prepare. (undress, lay down, breathe)
2. Song 3 plays. Therapist returns and begins session. Music is still slightly upbeat but slowly easing the client out of her hectic world and into "This time in between."
3. Music slows and stays mellow for the next five songs. Client drifts off to her own comfortable space.
4. With the next three songs, the musical journey begins to turn upward, slowly guiding the client back into a safe space. She is rejuvenated. And with the final song, uplifted yet still in a very mellow space.
5. Therapist and client are both left relaxed and energized.

SINGULAR CREATIVE VISION
David Feder is a phenomenal guitarist...and one of the best kept secrets in the Florida Keys. . . Black Emerald is David Feder's best work yet. I've listened to it over and over, and each time I'm knocked out by the energy of the music. It's one of those special albums that stand as a singular creative vision, not just a collection of songs. Dave's touch with the Latin guitar is magic."

EXQUISTIE AND BREATHTAKING
David Feder is one of the most exquisite and breathtaking guitarists of our time. David (& Nyan's) music is sensually dazzling, with a rural, outdoorsy freedom that swings just where it should.

WORLD-CLASS ACT
David Feder took the stage next -- a real world-class act.
He did amazing things on an electrified Taylor classical guitar during an absolutely incredible set. If his sheer musicianship wasn't dazzling enough, the stories he told about his compositions were funny, moving, and he really touched a lot of people with his music, including Black Emerald.

MUSIC SO CLEAR AND TRUE
If you get lucky enough to catch Dave Feder ... somewhere, you might feel like you were sitting at home in his living room, with Dave telling stories and chatting comfortably with his guests. Then he picks up his guitar and the music is so clear and true that it makes you shiver.

ECLECTIC FOLK MEETS CELTIC MEETS SAMBA
He engages the audience with a humorous wit as he tells stories of life on the road and in the Keys. He has an eclectic 'folk meets Celtic meets Samba' musical twist to his songs that are full of smart philosophical lyrics. The audience was dazzled and delighted.

TRUTHFUL CREATIVE VISION...A PERSONAL JOURNEY
The hard knocks of waiting to be heard in the music world can either redirect someone's career out of the business or embitter some of the brightest lights into dullness. And sometimes a seasoned artist can get so lost in the seduction of mercenary musical survival that their childhood dreams are lost forever. But occasionally, in a rare moment, we are blessed with the kind of talent that waits for it's time and refuses to compromise.
After years of traveling down some challenging musical slopes David Feder has emerged as just that kind of musician with a truthful creative vision all his own. He reminds us that the struggle was worth the wait and inspires us to try it ourselves. He has gifted us with an untainted collection of musical ideas that are savvy yet innocent, intelligent yet accessible. Playing from his heart he shows us more than just a glimpse of his soul. His musicianship incorporates miles of styles, woven into a personal journey telling stories about life through the strings of his guitar.
The music filled with virtuosity is not just about that; the real flavor comes from the humor behind the technique, and the fusion of unlikely cultures that ultimately are tied together in a common folk heritage. When you experience Feder performing live, you get what's it's really about. He commands the fretboard with jazz, blues, flamenco and bluegrass riffs that become dazzling guitar dances. And the story he tells about each composition gives insight so unsuspectingly into the psyche of a man full of life and love.
Music conceived from a cross-country motorcycle ride as in "The Ride" and his own interpretation of a young girl's dream in "Leila's Dream" shows how Feder uses his guitar not only to play but to illustrate.
He is very amusing when he tells of how "Salagua" was created in a real life club experience with his band when a request for a Gypsy Kings style tune turned into a Latin jam. It is especially touching when he shares his feelings for his wife Suzi (whose actual name is Sara) in "Saranade" and his son Nyan in my personal favorite the "Bun".
David Feder's music needs to be heard and his show needs to be experienced. After listening to Feder this past weekend at his concert at the TRIAD Theatre in New York City, it is evident that he has much to offer to the guitar repertoire. And he brings with him an abundance of entertainment to the stage!

CASCADES OF SPARKLING NOTES
His music is smooth and sweet and gentle but not too much. You know what I mean? There's a rural, outdoorsy freedom that swings just where it should. There's also a hardly hidden, say, low profile kind of melancholy thread woven through it that, for me, gives David's music it's greatest opportunity for greatness, a universality. Call it a bond of sympathy among countless souls. This might sound heavy but it isn't. David's hands flutter around a guitar creating cascades of sparkling notes; some drift away, others fall into places in us seemingly pre-shaped just to hold them. Not one note is thrown away, a quality shared with only the best writers, composers.

GENUINE SENSE OF EARTHLY GRATITUDE
David blends Latin jazz, funk, and the traditional . . . a superb experience in sound. I like that he puts "Please adopt a homeless animal" on all of his CDs; it's that sort of genuine sense of earthly gratitude that so often gets misplaced in the music world. He could easily be the hottest thing out of the Florida Keys right now.

SUBLIME PERFORMANCE
On a scale of one to seven, this one's a 10--this hillbilly-jazz artist, everybody should talk about. The distillation of David Feder's music as an art form features unforgettable wider geographic explorations -the advent of cool world music, with magnificent, economical arrangements and sublime performances by this bandit.
