YOGA PULSE

Each music track on YOGA PULSE is designed to provide unobstrusive musical support to yoga exercises. Non repeating melodic textures allow the mind to focus on the exercises, not the music, while rhythmic textures and pulses give a flow and tempo to the workout. A variation in timbres, tempo and instrumentation adds to the balance and flow of a yoga workout. Each musical piece builds upon the previous one, and the introduction of some unexpected musical “colors” enhances the texture and interest and helps to maintain the energy and focus generated during yoga practice.

The tranquil yet hypnotic sequence of tracks on YOGA PULSE is perfect for yoga, massage and bodywork, even meditation and stress-relief. From the beginning, the listener is transported into an exotic and beautiful musical journey. Once again, Michael Benghiat elevates the “relaxation music’ genre to a new level of meaning and resonance with YOGA PULSE.

FROM THE MUSICIAN:

I decided to play all the instruments on YOGA PULSE myself. This is the first time I have done this. I used acoustic, nylon, and electric guitars, balalaika, ukelele, djembe, dulcimer, bongos, log drum, and keyboards. The ukelele as I used it lends a somewhat exotic sound - you won't recognize it. I wanted to have a world music flavor for this CD but without any specific references or music genres. I tried to give it an overall sense of warmth and hopefulness by using major modalities and keys.

My favorite track is called Awakening. This was one of the first pieces I wrote and recorded. I think it captures the spirit of warmth, unity and harmony that I want to express in music. Because this is a yoga CD, I used slightly faster tempos than I usually do. I also employed some polyrhythm aspects. Though the tracks vary greatly in sound and texture, I felt that they somehow blended together into an interesting musical experience.

The fifth track, Kotekan, which means interlocking melodic patterns, is the most unusual one. It is played entirely on the Balinese gamelan. The different instruments have unusual overtones that blend into an exotic soundscape. The gongs are used for punctuation and signaling the melodic phrases. The final track, Eternity, has no rhythmic contour which allows the mind and body to relax without a being distracted by a rhythmic pulse.
